Malaysia Airlines was founded in 1945 and started operations in 1946. It is headquartered at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang, Selangor, Malaysia. Its main hub is KLIA 2. On July 18th, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went missing from radar screens while flying over Malaysian airspace between Malaysia and Vietnam. There were 239 people on board including 154 passengers and 85 crew members. Only 153 passengers and 12 crew members survived the crash. The plane vanished after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur International Airport shortly before midnight local time on March 8th, 2014. The last communication came from the cockpit at 1:19 am. The flight's transponder stopped working soon after takeoff, but its satellite-based locator beacon continued transmitting until it ran out of battery power. The aircraft’s final position was about 730 nautical miles off course, near the border of Vietnamese and Cambodian airspace. After days of searching, the wreckage of the Boeing 777 jet was discovered on the ocean floor, southeast of Perth, Western Australia, on April 17th, 2014. In 2010, MAS was awarded three-and-a-half stars out of five by Skytrax, based on their overall performance. Its safety record has improved since then, but the airline still receives a lot of criticism for its poor customer service. Some of the recent issues include 1) Flight 370 - the plane that went missing in March 2014 after taking off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport; 2) Flight 17 - the passenger jet that crashed in Ukraine in July 2014; and 3) MH17 - the Boeing 777 was shot down in July 2014 while flying over eastern Ukraine.
